Some Kind of Lobster by Fredericton downer-punk two-piece Beard Springsteen teaches the art of self-acceptance for fuck-ups, delivering these important life-lessons in the form of four noisy-yet-melodic anthems.
Initially a solo outlet for frontman and erstwhile Halifax grad student JE Sheehy (The Trick, Off Season), Beard Springsteen has now enlisted Josh Steeves (Brookside Mall, The Damnsels, The Kamalas). In a mere two hours in January 2016, the band recorded Downer Punks of Fredericton, their debut release as a two-piece, live off-the-floor.
Ever since, they’ve relentlessly toured pubs, bowling alleys, thrift stores, basements, festivals, and houses across New Brunswick, including the latest edition of Sappyfest in Sackville as well as opening slots for CanCon darlings BA Johnston, KJ Jansen of Chixxdiggit fame, Needles//Pins, TV Freaks and Les Hôtesses d’Hilaire.
On Some Kind of Lobster, the jam Slippery Sidewalks deals with the scariness of a hostile outside world for which anxiety, in ATMBNB, is the only coping mechanism. He Said, She Said challenges the inner dialogues of an introverted mind, and the first single; Bored at the ECMAs has nothing to do with the Canadian East Coast music festival, but rather the realization that history simply failed to deliver the promises of LCD Soundsystem’s All My Friends.
Recorded by Dylan Ward (David in the Dark), Some Kind of Lobster represents a departure from Beard Springsteen’s established, noise punk sound, showcasing melodies before urgency. After all, melancholy isn’t an obstacle to hooks; Some Kind of Lobster takes cues from The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Solids and Dog Day. The band transcends its influences, injecting the amalgam of sounds with insouciant attitude.
Beard Springsteen is a 2016 MNB Awards nominee in the “Loud Artist of the Year” category.
